WOMEN AND MEMORY CONCERNS

Did you know that any one of the situations can be responsible for increased forgetfulness?

  1. Are you on overload? Multitasking?

  2. Always in a hurrying?
Rushing from one thing on your to do list to the next?

  3. Are you working? At an office? In the home? Volunteering?

  4. Concerned about older adults in your family?

  5. Under a lot of stress?

  6. Trouble sleeping?

  7. Not eating as well as you should?

  8. Not taking the time you should to exercise?

  9. Caregiving?

They say you teach what you need to learn. Recently I found my dishwashing soap in my refrigerator. I had a good laugh as I recalled how crazy the days surrounding this “memory glitch” had been. I was not worried that I had Alzheimer’s disease. I was just rushing around, saw the soap, and was rushing to put things away before I left the house. Obviously It did not end up where it should have been. I figured that it was a tall bottle, was reddish in color and I usually drink cranberry juice so, by not paying attention, I put it there instead. Fortunately the cranberry juice was not out at the time otherwise no telling where I might have put it!!!!!!!!!!!! Can you relate to this? Trust me, I have many more stories.

These seem like little things and they are, but what if it were something important? Many times good memory improvement starts with setting better boundaries. Someone once shared with me a definition of stress. It is when your mouth says "yes" and your head says "no".

To give you a better ideas of some of the topics covered in my book, online course, and presentations, I have highlighted some of the things women of all ages need to realize. What is concerning me the number of younger women now complaining about their memory. Times are different and lifestyles have changed dramatically with the advent of technology and multitasking. What is going to happen when they hit their 50’s, 60’s and beyond?   Whether you have a group of retirees, young mothers, working women, women who are caregiving or just interested in wellness for successful aging through all the decades, programs can be created to meet your particular needs.

  1. Think positive. Eliminate negative expressions especially “senior moment.”
  2. Pay attention. You cannot remember without effort! Have regular eye exams and have your hearing checked.
  3. Reduce clutter and become more organized. Find a home for frequently used but often misplaced items.
  4. Slow down, concentrate, and reduce multitasking.
  5. Stress makes it harder to remember. Find a stress reduction routine that works for you! Meditation, exercise, and laughter are excellent options.
  6. Repeating information, writing it down, and using other memory props are essential for recall especially when under stress.
  7. If you cannot think of a word, relax and find a substitute word.
  8. To remember a person’s name, repeat it several times. Ask questions and try and associate it with a person from your past. Linking a new memory with an old one may help you recall their name.
  9. Keep active and challenge your mind. Be curious, ask questions, and socialize! Refuse to be bored.
  10. If you are concerned about your memory, get a complete physical.  There are over 100 causes of memory loss that are reversible. Older adults should consult a doctor who specializes in aging or schedule a geriatric assessment.
