In 1977 Visiting Nurse Service published the first volume of Therapy Guide for Language and Speech Disorders written by Kathryn Kilpatrick, MA, CCC/SLP.

Since then, all five volumes--as well as the accompanying videos -- have become the staple of many therapists’ materials collection. Almost 100,000 have been sold throughout the world.

In addition to Therapy Guide for Language and Speech Disorders, Kathy Kilpatrick has developed a  series of products that enhance reminiscence and provide a multitude of activities and conversation starters. Combined, these materials provide a comprehensive speech and language therapy program which can be individualized to meet patients’ unique needs.

Try the reproducible worksheets from the VNS collection of materials if you need a resource to give patients and their families that educates them about specific details, demonstrates functional outcomes, and incorporates activities beyond your treatment.

These revised and updated products have been an excellent resource for a variety of therapy settings for over twenty years, have been used extensively in establishing home carryover programs, and meet the current and changing needs of our profession. The large print products are well organized and formatted in a hierarchy with simple directions, providing the therapist more time with the patient, and allowing the family/caregiver to enhance a measurable outcome in which all can participate.

Even though your therapy time has been affected by the continuing changes in health care, your patient’s needs have not. There is a way to make this a win-win situation. Make every minute of your therapy count! The products are designed to address the various needs of your patients, assist you in securing more visits and allow you to utilize your professional skills beyond the limitations of insurance coverage.

Volume 3

Working with Words

SAMPLE PAGES

This innovative workbook features a collection of large print puzzles and word games designed to sharpen and stimulate the reasoning and verbal skills in a patient with mild to moderate neurological impairment. It is an excellent resource for a patient with visual field neglect, attention/concentration problems, or word finding difficulties.

Activities are built around popular topics and include synonyms, antonyms, definitions, categories, similarities and differences, logical inferences plus much more. Answers are provided.

Patients needing practice copying or improving the intelligibility to their written responses with either their dominant or non-dominant hand generally enjoy this type of format. When patients have their own workbook, it not only can motivate them, but it will encourage independent practices as they progress through the hierarchy of activities. For many patients, it may lead to new leisure time activities or help those who previously enjoyed doing puzzles ease back into that pastime.

Activities include:

           Word Builder
           Fun with Words
           Words for the Wise
           Word Hunter
           Word Puzzles

Sample exercises at each level (I, II, and III) are provided along with the answers to help the therapist determine the appropriate level to start treatment and assign carryover exercises.

This well-organized workbook is an excellent resource when therapy focuses on relearning and remembering strategies and techniques for:

Problem solving
Inductive/deductive reasoning
Conceptualization
Organization
Judgment
Sequencing
Attention/concentration
Visual field neglect

Visual-Spatial Reasoning
Verbal Reasoning
Numerical Reasoning

Volume 5

Therapy Guide for

Language and Speech Disorders
Reading Comprehension Materials

SAMPLE PAGES

Here is a workbook with excellent, large print reading materials for the adult or older child that are more advanced than the stories in Volume 1. These stories are both practical and informative, and they relate to everyday experiences or are factual with high interest. This makes therapy more pertinent to a patient’s daily living and thus more motivating.

These materials also have an application for a patient needing exercises for attention/concentration difficulties, immediate recall of new information, or visual field neglect.
With their own copy of the workbook, patients are able to practice regularly between sessions. Progress is then more readily visible as they advance to the lengthier, more complex stories, eventually attempting some of their previous reading interests.

Workbook sections include:

Thinking About Words
Following Directions
Who/what
Stories in Part
Short Stories—General/Factual
More Stories

Functional Therapy Guide

More Than A Workbook

Activities for Improved Communication in Daily Living

Functional Therapy Guide provides concise, clear, and easy to follow functional therapy carryover tools for effective carryover treatment. It is written by Kathy Kilpatrick, who is well known for her practical recommendations in her Visiting Nurse Service (VNS) workbooks. Functional Therapy allows the therapist to evaluate and treat the patient while setting up guidelines for an effective carryover program upon discharge from a hospital or rehabilitation program.

FTG is the first "managed care" workbook which the SLP can easily use to equip the patient and family to carry on treatment once the SLP has discontinued or decreased the frequency of therapy sessions.
