IDEAS Consulting
IDEAS Institute

Provides great resources on environments for elderly such as these suggestions:

  • Ever think someone was unable to do a task because they couldn’t see it, even though they were wearing their glasses? Try increasing the lighting and adding more visual contrast to the task area.
  • Ever wonder how to design a better bathroom to make it easier to help someone take a bath or shower? Add soft music, add room heaters, use warm towels and add brightly colored grab bars that are easy to see, along with a shower bench or transfer chair.
  • Looking for ideas on how to make a nursing home feel more like home? Let residents determine when they want to get up, even if it means they only get a continental breakfast (but be sure to give them a snack in the evenings). Encourage residents to bring furniture from home for the public, shared living spaces, not just their bedrooms, and make the dining rooms smaller.

Information about these and other topics can be found at www.IDEASConsultingInc.com and www.IDEASInstitute.org

In My Mother’s Kitchen:
An Introduction to the Healing Power of Reminiscence   by Robin A. Edgar

"Everyone has a story to tell,’’ said Robin Edgar. ’’For every story there is to tell, there is somebody who wants to hear it.’’ To remember is to heal... heal from the pain of loss... heal with a sense of hope for the future. Her enhanced second edition of In My Mother’s Kitchen has more examples of how to recall, record and celebrate significant memories. This reminiscence process helps individuals to recognize and value the individuals and incidents that shaped their lives. An easy to use tool for journaling family histories, it is also useful for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one.$11.95, 128-page paperback

NORTHCOAST CONFLICT SOLUTIONS

TRUCE! Using Elder Mediation to Resolve Conflict among Families, Seniors, and Organizations

Families bicker.  Even loving families.  Some silly arguments are easily resolved when one party puts the disagreement in perspective and pulls out of the fracas.  However, arguments that persist and result in deep wounds, hurt feelings, anger and some of the more "challening" emotions are well-served by seeking objective help from mediators.

Who will benefit from this book?  Family caregivers, hospital administrators, liaisons,  and others working with families in conflict, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, rehab centers, gerontologists, parish nurses, physicians, and others who work with seniors.

TIPS FROM MOM

My mom experienced increased memory loss and since she was a woman who took great pride in her verbal, written and organizational skills, this was a source of great frustration to her. Her influence brought me to the place where I do the work that I do today and she became my teacher in a whole different way. I can still see myself at the kitchen table as a grade school student working on projects, playing games like Scrabble etc. She gave me permission to share some of the strategies she has been using as she dealt with her increased frustrations with memory loss. Perhaps you will find that these tips will be helpful to someone you know who is becoming more forgetful.

TODAY’S CAREGIVER MAGAZINE

is an excellent resource for caregivers. Gary Barg, editor-in-chief of Today’s Caregiver magazine, realized after having experienced caregiving firsthand for his father and grandparents, that there needed to be a single source of information, support, and advice for caregivers. This is why he launched the magazine, along with caregiver.com, the first online community for caregivers. In addition to the magazine and online service, he’s created The Fearless Caregiver Forums, which are held throughout the country, along with the national Sharing Wisdom Conference held annually in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Gary has dedicated nearly a decade of his life to being the caregiver of caregivers.

WEBSITE TO SHARE
MY JOURNEY
by Chip Gerber

I had the privilege of meeting Chip and his wife, Sharon, through my work with the local Alzheimer’s chapter and I would like to share with you a bit of his story and his website.

Chip is a soon to be 57-year-old male that lives in Canton, Ohio. He worked for over 25 years as a licensed social worker and was diagnosed as having early onset Alzheimer’s Disease around March of l997. Since then he has no longer been able to work at his profession. Chip’s grandmother died in 1978 from Alzheimer’s and his mother, age 88, also has the disease.

Chip has chosen to be an Alzheimer’s Disease advocate. He and his wife are active in three monthly early stage Alzheimer’s Disease groups, 2 support groups and was asked by the Cleveland Association to participate in focus groups/ seminars. In July 2000 he became an angel for e-mail Angels and does daily journaling with them so that he can share with and encourage others. He also enjoys journaling for himself and recommends it to others.
