REFERENCE LETTER MEMORY FITNESS REVIEWS UPCOMING PROGRAMS

GERIATRIC COMMUNICATION CONSULTING Regarding a private consultation January 2008 for a man 2 yrs post CVA with receptive and expressive aphasia We are already seeing positive results in our attitudes and practice as we begin to implement the program. We have given hints and suggestions to nurses and aides and they are assisting us. My husband’s 2 sisters have come along side. Most of all - my husband is much more at ease and participating. Putting your ideas and plans out on our family web page has gotten families off to a great start in helping us! With great appreciation ~ D.S. Private consultation for a family concerned about a loved one’s increasing memory difficulties. SUMMER 2007 First of all thank you for your newsletter which I read it with great interest. I can’t emphasize how much your information and recommendations have helped our family. The greatest accomplishment is that my father now goes to an Alzheimer’s facility 2 mornings per week giving my mother a much needed break and on another day my mother goes to a caregiver’s meeting (even goes out to lunch with them). This helps her understand the difficulties they all face in providing for their loved ones who have Alzheimer’s disease. My father can again participate in the activities at the Alzheimer’s center. Nothing can return my father to his former self but we can now better understand what is happening to the man we once knew. We finally stopped talking and did something, if only a little bit considering the realm of what is available. What has been done is within our present "comfort zone", AND, we know a lot more about what do to, or where to go to try and do something if (and I probably should say when) his Alzheimer’s symptoms become more acute. Thank you ~ MCL PROGRAMS Spoken from the heart. Excellent examples. You are a true therapy champion! Thanks for giving and sharing. Loved her ideas and her obvious passion for her work – impressed with how down to earth she is – very dynamic – liked the stories and the interactions with others to illustrate a point – great insights into appreciating the older adult’s wisdom. Thanks for sharing more than information - you shared a part of yourself.
Her sessions were truly a highlight for the participants who were over-whelming in their praise – It is clear she has abundant knowledge and derives much pleasure in sharing what she knows. Kathy is an excellent speaker. I could listen to her any time. Her humor comes in across in every speech. Her topics are right on the money. I truly appreciate you relating how much you learn from….rather than how much you taught them (dementia patients and their families) – your learning shows how open you are to their needs. Keep up the good work.
This information is so necessary and it was helpful to hear that you have experienced this and practice these tips in your own home life situation. She has the ability to present large volumes of information while making it relevant, practical and interesting. Excellent presentation but feel I could have benefited from a day long program. Always great to receive affirmation for what I do daily. Increased my knowledge on how to assist some of my consumers to better their lives in their day to day living....very knowledgeable. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and creative programming ideas with the Adult Day services staff...
Presentation was extremely informative and perfected worded for both the person diagnosed with memory loss and their family members - direct yet tactful approach was ideal.
Her FOCUS column had suggestions that showed a sensitive understanding of the life issues, feelings and concerns of the older adult. They were practical, doable and meaningful.
Cares for her patients and it shows – very respectful of the older adult. Storytelling is always a great way of bringing home a point. Thank you for being so vulnerable and sharing. Appreciated her kindness, patience and good humor. Her experienced approach opened up avenues for me to pursue in order to continue a better quality of life for MA-MA.
You worked with Mom with such enthusiasm … improving the quality of her life with so many fresh ideas. Sincere - spoke from her heart - very easy to listen to - storyteller in the making. Thought the class was very beneficial and I plan on sharing the information with my ministers of elder care...
Many of my people on the Older Adult Council are wanting copies of all the handouts. There is a great need for this type of information. Everyone liked your style and ability to communicate in a way they can understand, as well as appreciate that you really know what you are talking about. Kathy was “amazingly inspiring,” “knowledgeable.”
Presentation was “very thorough, very well done, informative,” “went above and beyond my expectations.”
Excellent – have her back.
I feel my life has improved in one evening. Thank you, Kathryn.
Thank you for this gift.

Her knowledge of dietary matters has been invaluable to me in the case of an eighty-nine year old man with severe Gastric Reflux Disease. With Kathy’s supervision we have been able to modify his diet without completely eliminating the foods he loves. As a result, his symptoms have decreased significantly. Some of the modifications have been as follows: limiting his coffee, and caffeine intake in general, taking his medications during his meals, not before, and not eating certain foods, such as foods rich in citric acid together with any food or beverage containing caffeine. These have greatly reduced his gastric problems which included much vomiting. Kathy has written many publications that have also been of great service in the case of my client. He has memory problems, due to Macular Degeneration of the eyes and hearing problems. Since he can no longer see or hear well he had lost interest in doing much of anything, except sleeping. There is no dementia involved; but he was displaying symptoms similar to dementia due to his sight and hearing loss which put him in his own, very small world. Kathy’s exercises have greatly aided in his increased interest in life again. He loves for me to ask him the questions provided in her texts. The questions are designed to make one think hard and reach back in one’s memory for the answers. He has done very well with all of the exercises we have tried and especially loves the ones that force him to remember. It has amazed me at how good he is at these and how interested he is in them. In a way, these exercises have helped to give him “a new lease on life.” He looks forward to them everyday, and seeing what they have done for him has been tremendously encouraging to me. I also look forward to them as I am seeing a lot of the person he “used” to be and still is with a little help. All he needed was some stimulation to his brain and that is what he is now getting. follow-up email We are having a lot of fun with these exercises. He really, truly loves them because they make him put on his thinking cap. I am going to make up some of my own questions and games as we are running out of material, but I know his interests so it should be fairly simple. I have also started reading the local news to him as well as the Bible--he loves it. So, thanks again! PP - Home Health Aide August, 2007 updated 1/23/2010
